Abstract:

This talk will introduce my recent research advances in modeling, analysis, and optimization of human and logistics flows in transport systems. Transport and logistics systems often involve multiple transport modes and sectors, including road, public transport, railway and aviation. This talk will illustrate with research examples how transport research draws on tools from operations research, economics, network science, traffic flow theory, and data analytics to understand and manage complex interactions between transport infrastructure and user, between travel modes (e.g., air and land, private and public), and among different decision-makers (e.g., government, infrastructure manager, service provider, and user). Issues arising with cutting-edge technologies and emerging mobility services will be envisioned. Management strategies for mobility, reliability and sustainability enhancements will be developed and discussed.

Short Bio

Dr Fangni Zhang is an Assistant Professor at the School of Aviation at University of New South Wales in Australia. Prior to this, Dr Zhang worked at the Institute for Transport Studies at University of Leeds and the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London in the UK. Dr Zhang received her PhD degree in Transportation from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and her Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Beihang University, Beijing, China. Her current research covers a wide range of fundamental or emerging issues in transport, including infrastructure planning and operations, large-scale multimodal system monitoring and optimization, shared transport management, and automated transport planning and operations. Her research has been published in a number of world-leading journals and conferences in the field, such as Transportation Research Part A, B, C, D, E. Dr Zhang has played a leading role in a number of research projects funded by prestigious funding bodies both nationally and internationally and works closely with many major transport agencies, infrastructure managers, and operating companies.
