“Ball Type Rolling Robot for Inspection and Rescue” has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEG). This remarkable invention is a collaborative effort between the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF), and the research team led by Professor Ning Xi, Chair Professor of Robotics and Automation, Director of Advanced Technologies Institute, and Head of Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

The ball type rolling robot is a compact solution for accessing hard-to-reach areas in inspection, rescue, and negotiation tasks. Unlike larger robots and drones, this rolling robot can manoeuvre through tight spaces, making it a valuable asset in search and rescue operations.

The robot’s design enables it to conduct comprehensive inspections, increasing effectiveness in rescue missions and possibly saving lives. Its size and shape allow it to traverse various terrains and access narrow spaces, while its advanced technology provides users with real-time information during critical situations.

Besides negotiation and inspection tasks for the HKPF, the rolling robot could also perform search and rescue operations for the Hong Kong Fire Services Department in complex building fire scenes. Its compact design and advanced capabilities make it an ideal tool for inspecting intricate structures, monitoring sensitive areas, and improving overall safety.

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is known for showcasing breakthroughs in diverse fields. This year’s Gold Medal-winning robot is a prime example of the innovative work of Prof. Ning Xi’s research team, alongside EMSD and HKPF.

The Gold Medal marks a significant milestone for the research team and their partners, and the ball type rolling robot highlights the power of collaboration and innovation in developing life-saving technology.
