The Correctional Services Department (CSD) has incorporated virtual reality scenario training with imseCAVE into the induction training courses provided by the Staff Training Institute from year 2017-18.

This programme is co-produced by the CSD and the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering of the University of Hong Kong with a grant of $1.8 million from the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Innovation and Technology Commission.

There are currently three scenarios for the training including self-mutilation, suicide and fighting among prisoners. Correctional staff will be equipped with 3D glasses, remote control and simulated pepper spray for the practice. Through different training scenarios and settings, trainees' capabilities in dealing with contingencies in institutions will be enhanced. The system will also record the performance data of trainees for analysis and evaluation.
