MPhil/PhD

The Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering was established in 1973 within the Faculty of Engineering as the first Industrial Engineering department in Hong Kong. The Department offers postgraduate research programmes leading to the degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with digital enterprise technology as a major focus, in areas including industrial and service systems engineering, logistics engineering and supply chain management, operation planning and optimisation, simulation and modelling, enterprise resource planning, financial engineering, intelligent systems automation, human-systems engineering, knowledge management, service-oriented e-logistics, and enterprise information systems.

Major Research Areas

Supply chain management:

Advanced manufacturing, logistics engineering, financial engineering, healthcare engineering, operations engineering, system analytics and human factors engineering.

Cyber-physical systems:

Robotics, systems automation, smart devices / auto ID, simulation and virtual reality and 3-D printing.

Departmental Requirements

Candidates are required to make an oral presentation of their research proposal as part of the procedure for the confirmation of candidature. Each candidate is also required to give at least one research seminar before submission of thesis title.

Scholarships

The Department offers scholarship exclusively for our qualifying Research postgraduate students, who achieved outstanding research outcomes during their studies in the Department of IMSE. Eligibility and details of each scholarship vary from year to year and assessment/interviews may be required.
