|
| The increasing
importance of logistics is due to a number of factors, which include
the rapid development of technology, the further development of global
markets resulting in a larger number of companies with operations
worldwide, and a corporate emphasis on quality and customer satisfaction.
|
|
| |
| With
the extensive relocation of manufacturing activities to China, Hong
Kong has become an increasingly important centre for imports and exports
from the mainland by providing finance, insurance, distribution and
telecommunication support. Hong Kong is also becoming a regional hub
and |
|
| now acts
as an integrator of various business activities, including sales,
marketing, procurement, distribution and logistics management. Factors
which are influencing the logistics function are early supplier involvement
in product design, global sourcing, supply chain management, strategic
alliances, outsourcing and quality assessment systems. |
| |
The importance
of logistics is also supported by the Second and Final Report of the
Chief Executive's Commission on Innovation and Technology, in which
it identifies the need for Hong Kong to develop its role as a logistics
hub and centre for supply chain management. |
| At the
same time, changes in the general business environment are also affecting
the purchasing function. For example, increased awareness of the natural
environment, in conjunction with government legislation, is affecting
customers' purchasing decisions. Logistics managers will also have
to cope with a deeper set of responsibilities with the trend towards
downsizing and a flatter organisational structure. Finally, new forms
of organisations such as virtual corporations will shift the focus
of supply management from products to core competencies. |
| |
|
| At the
undergraduate level, the emphasis of this BEng curriculum will be
given to developing relevant skills. Typical skills to be developed
include: |
| |
|
| |
Logistics skills
- market analysis, collaborative relationships, sourcing decisions,
change management and planning and organisational skills; |
| |
Systems engineering
- cost analysis, product and design knowledge, computer literacy,
supplier selection, production planning and inventory control; |
| |
Interpersonal skills
- written and oral communication, group dynamics, problem solving
and international and cultural awareness. |
| |
| The emphasis
of this BEng programme is on developing an integrated view towards
solving logistics problems. The objective is therefore to produce
graduates who can work not only as part of a team, but also have the
necessary entrepreneurial skills to identify potential opportunities
for organisations in minimising the total cost of the logistics solution. |
This
degree programme is newly accredited by the Chartered Institute
of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong, which is the Hong Kong
Section of the international professional organisation Chartered
Institute of Logistics and Transport in the U.K. Graduates of this
programme qualify academically for chartered members of the Institute.
